I really enjoyed this book. Ladee Hubbard did a masterful job weaving together the stories of several individuals who experienced racism in the early 1900s, but whose reactions to it varied. In some ways all of the responses were revenge on those who had oppressed them, but this revenge took many forms. The characters were well developed and just enough of their backstories were provided in order to help the reader understand their choices in the era in which the book was set. Hubbard did a great job of creating multi-dimensional characters. No one was purely good or purely evil and even the actions of the "bad guy" were given context within the times in which he was raised and the experiences that he had had at the hands of others. Themes of classism, racism, and revenge are through lines in this novel.
