The exploration of this perspective of the black experience in American history was eye opening. Over and over again, well written fiction such as this is able to bring to light in a unique way how harmful white people have been through micro aggressions in addition to larger acts of hate. Though fictitious, I can’t help but think about how using a caricature of a black person to sell a product that a white person benefits from has happened and possibly even continues to happen.
I really enjoyed this story in this book and found it to be easily engaging and interesting. I would love to see more books that explore the inequality of race/class/gender, etc. in an approachable way- these should continue to become more common, but not in a contrived way. Stories that are true, with characters we connect with, have the potential to challenge us and engage us in a way that helps change the future, since we cannot change the past.
