I loved the simplicity of the book cover although this also looked like a book I'd normally disregard. I can tell from the first paragraph that it's the type of book I will be thankful I didn't ignore.
I already like the central character, Doris. I feel some pity for her as her carer rushes around her kitchen using the microwave and endlessly chattering. Her probing questions and use of hand painted cups make me feel Doris' anxiety. I like that Doris stops the dishwasher to get the hand painted cup out and hide it in the back of the cabniet.
So far her story starts off with a beautiful gift from her father but leads to his tragic death. I feel uneasy after her mother kicks her out and she becomes a maid to a wealthy lady. It left me wanting more and wondering if anything terrible happens at her new home. I'm hoping it leads to pleasant memories.
I definitely want to finish reading this book. I find the idea of going through an address book of names to write out her memories unique and sentimental. I feel like this book will be as special as The Book Thief or ones like it.
