In the first few chapters it occured to me that the writing style it self is pretty nice. No use of difficult language and the chapters take turns in quite an interesting way. But the information from the Deian rolls at the beginning (and sometimes during the story) seem to contain a few spoilers. Atleast that’s how I felt it. Because of this information you might be able to know what’s going on even before it’s confirmed in the story. But, this might just bes ome kind of writingstyle of de la Cruz. It only reduced some surprising elements.

On the other hand, the quality of the written words was pretty good. It keeps you interested in the story and curious. You just want to keep reading and you want to know how the story continues for Caledon and Shadow. At the beginning both storylines maintain a great distance from each other, but while the story continues, the storylines slowly run in to each other until Caledon and Shadow are propely introduced to each other. From that moment on, the speed of reading varies quite a lot. One moment they get chased and there’s a great threat which hangs over their heads. The other moment everything seems calm and you just have to wait for something new to happen. Normally this happens pretty fast, but sometimes it keeps you waiting. So sometimes it was easy to put the book down while other moments I just wanted to keep reading.

The final ending of the story was a little disappointing for me. Even though it didn’t go as I predicted, I hoped there was a little more action to it. It felt like the author was just telling us what happened at the end. Due to this the story might not be as striking as it could be. But it was still interesting and a good read. Also a positive addition tot he YA Fantasy genre. At the end the author gives a hint for a sequel, but it’s not quite clear to me what might happen in this second book. So no major cliffhanger, but I’m eager to read the next book anyway.

The writing is nice and pleasant to read which probably provides a high speed in reading. From the beginning, Shadow is a wondrous and fascinating character. During the first few chapters, you can feel her curiousity and the fact she’s carrying something special with her. It could be some kind of power or magic, but it isn’t quite clear. I wonder what will become of her and how the story will unfold around the first meeting in the woods.
