This book was FANTASTIC!!! It does start off a bit slow and eventually did start to pick up when Cal and Shadow head to Montrice.

We follow Shadow of the Honey Glade; who lives with her aunts, Moriah and Mesha, that are part of the Guild. Shadow occasionally will encounter visions from the past upon contact with a setting. During an episode she becomes sick encountering the fall of King Esban and is knocked on her back as the Aphrasian monk hovers over her, ready to drive a sword through her. Until a hooded figure appears and draws a sword right through their belly, saving her. She discovers the hooded figure is no other that Caledon, the Queen's Assassin and the attacker was the fallen king's younger brother, the Grand Prince. Now Cal will be sent to Deersia, a prison that is considered punishment just working there, let alone being a prisoner. Even though Prince Alast was a traitor to the crown, Cal must be punished for killing someone of Royal Blood. So Shadow seizes this opportunity to not only save Cal, like he saved her from the Prince, but also become an "apprentice" and finally get a chance to demonstrate she'd be a perfect candidate for the Guild.

I really enjoyed the plot twist at the end! It actually kind of turned me against a character who I really liked up until that point. All of the signs were THERE but somehow I ignored them and it only leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I still do not know how I feel about this!! But I do hope that the next book in this series will be MORE from Cal's perspectiveđź’›
