Sadly, even de la Cruz' solid writing could not make this original

It's 'meh'. Melissa de la Cruz is a good writer but this is a plot I've read a million times and I figured out every single twist long before it revealed. It's not a good sign when you know how everything is going to play out less than three chapters in.
That said, the story and characters are actually enjoyable. Plus, there's a whole lot of history and backstory built into the world and situations that Shadow and Cal find themselves in. There's even some light social commentary snuck in there to add depth to the story.
However, the sad part is that I just continually felt like I was reading a rehash of what every other YA fantasy title has been over the last couple of years. Even solid writing chops weren't enough to save this one from the middle of the pack.
