Don't get me wrong, I love a good assassin story, but this just wasn't my cup of tea. This was my first time reading anything by Melissa de la Cruz, but I got this overwhelming feeling of "her heart's not in it" from the writing. It seemed like she either lost motivation but was writing on a deadline or was encouraged to write something she wasn't passionate about. Of course, this could be totally untrue, but it's the vibe I got from the writing; I'm really not sure how else to explain it.

The characters fell super flat for me. I couldn't bring myself to care about anything going on. I found myself counting how many pages were left before the end of each chapter. It honestly put me in a huge reading slump and took over 2 months to finish. I really should have DNFed, but I always feel the responsibility to finish reading when I receive an advanced copy.
