The Queen's Assassin is an okay book.
It starts out with a backstory of what happened before the main characters was born.
The king and queen of their country is currently at war with a rebel group called the Aphrasians.
One of the most powerful things in the world is these Deian scrolls that contain a bunch of spells and magic. The Aphrasians want those scrolls and they started the war for it. The current king, King Esban, wins the war but dies during the process. They never actually found the scrolls. The queen, distraught about the kind and his sacrifice, asks Caledon's father, Cordyn the Queen's trusted assassin to make a blood promise that he, and any future descendants will look for the scrolls.
Caledon's dad dies after a while and his promise passes on to his son, Caledon.
We then get the second main characters pov, Shadow. She wants to join the Guild (which is basically the Queens guards and assassins and stuff). But she can't because her mom and aunts won't let her. She gets really angry one day after learning that she has to go back to court when she's been living at her aunt's for her whole life. She runs into the forest and naturally in her anger gets lost and realizes she's at this place where the Queen's enemy has gathered. The Aphrasians hear her and come out looking for her and she almost gets killed and shocker the GUY comes out and saves her. It's Caledon, who she immediately recognizes even though it's dark. He kills the prince who was there with the Aphrasians, he was known to be very loyal to the queen. After that we learn that Cal's being sent to this prison for killing him. And Shadow decides that she can't let that happen because the prince was actually bad and Cal saved her from being killed by him. She also sees a chance to become a Guilds apprentice under Caledon. So the next day when the palace guards are parading Caledon around in a big cage through the streets she follows him, disguised as a man.
She eventually breaks him out and flees the city with him as his 'apprentice'. He was expecting that as he wasn't ACTUALLY imprisoned but rather staying there till the one of the Queens men breaks him out. After that the book really starts.
All in all the book was again, okay. Some parts of it were a little bit too cliche for me but maybe that's because I've read a lot of books and kinda know what most authors are going to do. The writing was fine. I disagreed with the characters at parts but besides that they were nice. It's definitely not my favorite but isn't a bad read.
