interesting concept but does not live up to potential
Going into Melissa de la Cruz's book "The Queen's Assassin," I had very high hopes for this novel after throughly enjoying her contemporary "29 Dates." However, I was quickly thrown off by the switching perspectives in the book, which shifted from first to third person quite frequently. It felt kind of off-putting to be at one moment inside the mind of a character and then as an onlooker in the next chapter. I think I would have enjoyed the book much more if it was all written from either first or third perspective.
However, I do think that the world-building is fantastic, and I felt really intrigued by the lore as well. I was also drawn character of Shadow who has a very strong voice and seems to have more to her than first glance. However, I felt like the twist near the ending of the book was a bit confusing, and I was not very satisfied with the conclusion of the book. I hope the sequel will do better.
