Shadow has lived with her aunts in the country for her whole life, but she wants nothing more than to serve in the Guild, an elite underground network of magic-users and assassins working to keep the current Queen in power. After an attempt on her life is thwarted by the Caledon, the Queen’s Assassin, Shadow sees a way to enter the guild, in spite of her family’s insistence that it’s too dangerous. Running away from her duties at home, she pursues Caledon, posing as his new apprentice. As the two work together to unravel the conspiracy to overthrow the thrown, they begin to grow closer, and soon it is difficult to tell what is an act and what is real.

I have enjoyed Melissa De La Cruz’s romance stories before, and I was really excited to see how her fantasy world would be shaped in The Queen’s Assassin. I was confused at points by the shifts in perspective between the characters, and I felt as though some of the development in the story was paced rather strangely. Aside from these two issues, though, I really enjoyed the story and the different trials the characters face. The inclusion of queer side characters was also a plus for me, as I’m always happy to see representation in fantasy!

You can get your copy of The Queen’s Assassin on February 4th from G. P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers!

My Recommendation-
If you are a fan of Sarah B Larson or Tricia Levensteller, Melissa De La Cruz’s fantasy world would be perfect for you! The Queen’s Assassin is a great story for someone looking for a fantasy romance with a future series to follow!
