Overall the book felt juvenile and disconnected but had a really good idea that was executed only okay. This YA fantasy court novel was a bit unpredictable, but not in a good way. The novel starts off with a lot of intrigue and adventure. A headstrong young woman rejects her future and pursues her own. This was the part I really enjoyed. There is a lot of mystery and good descriptions of setting and sensory details. It's once the adventure starts that things start to go down hill. The main character is looking for someone specific and goes undercover to do so but finding the person she needs is way too easy and happens within 2 short chapters. The beginning talks a lot of magic and secret societies but once the 2 main characters meet, that all goes out the window. They go from hating each other one second to falling in love the next. Once they arrive at their destination all the intrigue and magic goes out the window because they can only focus on what the other is doing. They are petty and immature as main characters. There is no more talk of magic as everything becomes about the court and balls and figuring out who is who. It felt like another book at this point. Then towards the end there is a twist with an info dump that tries to bridge the beginning with the middle but ends up being lack luster. It feels like everything is pretty tied at up at the end and I am not sure where this will go in the next book.
