This book opens with a history lesson from the world in which this story is based. Then we see soldiers returning from battle and learn that the king has died and the queen is trying to figure out what to do. The queen and her assassin make a vow and we learn that the queen has purple blood, but we don't know what that means. Then we skip 18 years into the future into the story of someone who know almost nothing about, but eventually learn is the daughter of the queen.
