This book is based in a fictional world that contains dwarves, centaurs, witches, and just about every kind of magickal (book spelling) creature you can think of, but none of it is explained. Maybe I don't have the imagination needed to read this, but while I was craving more information about the power our main character Gemma possesses and more, I was instead reading about an immature child character who whines, doesn't listen to reason and acts on impulsive behaviors that don't expand my understanding of what is going on. I feel like most of the time I was missing out on the action and found myself flipping the page back to see if I missed an entire section.
I did appreciate the humor. In its way, it worked for the characters and I giggled a few times. But I did not find a powerful heroine in this book as I expected. The so-called romance with Quinn, a centaur, was cute, but lacking in any real emotion. The sister Keeley, who is queen, also has a lot of growing up to do. I feel like she cares more for the animals in her queendom than her subjects.
Overall, I did enjoy it enough, but I am left with far too many questions that I don't feel will be answered in any future book.
