Didn't Suit Me

Unfortunately, the paranormal romance novel The Princess Knight by G.A. Aiken did not strike my fancy as much as I hoped it would.

First, I should clarify that I have not read the first book in the Scarred Earth series, but I liked the sample for this one. While I made it through okay, I wouldn't say this is a series you can just jump into.

The further I got into this book, the more I came to realize that the writing style just doesn't suit me. I felt it was too jumpy, going from one character to another (like multiple quick jump cuts in a movie) all the time. There were also several character POVs that added nothing to the story and were completely unnecessary. Speaking of characters, I never felt particularly connected to any of the characters. Their relationships weren't very fleshed out. Perhaps because there were too many?

One of the biggest problems for me was that I never felt grounded in the world. I never got a sense of the geography of the settings, and there was no sense of the distance between things. Considering how much traveling went on in the story, I would have expected a better understanding of the space they were moving through.

Along the same lines, I thought the characters had it too easy. They never really had to work or "level up" to accomplish something. Everything seemed to just fall into their laps or happen to go their way. Some more struggle and growth would have been nice.

Finally, for a "paranormal romance" novel, this was sorely lacking in the romance department. As in there wasn't really any. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't feel there was much of a romantic connection between Gemma and Quinn, so the romance (what little there was) fell flat.

The cover is pretty cool, though it doesn't have much of anything to do with the story.

Now, I didn't hate this book or anything. It had some funny moments and an interesting concept. But, while this book had potential, it just didn't live up to my expectations.
