A can't-put-down fantasy adventure full of action and engaging characters!
I had no idea this was book 2 of a series when I requested it. However, I had no trouble falling into the fantasy world and getting to know the characters. Aiken does a great job with effortless worldbuilding. Elements are introduced at just the right time.
What really stood out to me: this book is absolutely hysterical. The characters have such great dynamics. Honestly, I laughed through almost every chapter! Despite the many, many f-bombs and battle violence and a sex scene, elements I generally avoid, I had so much fun with the story. The characters are amazingly well-developed. There are a multitude of characters, but I never got them mixed up because each personality was dynamic.
While one character dual goes way too fast, overall there were some great battle moments. Readers experience a vast amount of the landscape and meet various magical peoples and creatures. Lots of political intrigue and moments where different characters get to shine.
I would definitely read more of this series. I want more of the characters and their rich dynamics. I want to explore more of the world and see where the journey began. For fans of fantasy, I'd highly recommend with the stipulation that there's graphic content.
