Irreverent tone, mixed opinion

I love banter between characters, but this almost leans too far into that tone while also trying to project a level of seriousness to the violence. She quips - she slices someone's head off - she makes a snarky comment - she leaves someones entrails dangling. It just seems like the tone is a little unbalanced. Also, the worldbuilding is tossed in haphazardly. I'm guessing the idea was to reveal things naturally, but the end result doesn't feel that way. She's a war monk. Wait, now it's two years later. How did she get there? It's so unclear as to be fully confusing. Also, a bunch of the characters are centaurs who can also take human form. And there's magic. Upon further digging, I see this is actually the second book in a series, so that explains some of it, but that also leads me to say that nothing in the publisher's description indicates that, which is a major disservice to readers.
