While reading this I felt like I was diving into a series that had already started, and then I did my research and discovered that it is indeed the second book in the series. While I think that someone who is a fantasy reader might be more successful in diving into this without having read the previous book, for me it felt like I didn't quite understand the world enough to jump in here.
