Reader’s Notes:
– this is told from Leelo & Jaren’s points of view
– Leelo’s dress was removed with Jaron’s help before she laid down next to him, they kissed, & the chapter ended; the new chapter started the next morning and explains that they had sex the night before (vague in details, but easily understood that is what happened)
Review:
I removed a star mainly because by the end the story fell flat for me. Some of the surprise twists seemed to come out of no where (like I don’t think there was any opening from the beginning that made it seem plausible/as easily acceptable as the characters took it). Not all of the twists had this issue, just some of them. I also was not a fan of the last point in the reader’s notes.
Despite the things I mentioned above, this story did hold my attention really well! I was interested in the workings and history of the island, wandering forest, and the Endlans. I wondered why the Endlans did the different practices they did. I was interested in the developing relationship between Leelo and Jaren as well as how they were going to be discovered. I enjoyed seeing different secrets come to light and how it affected what was going on.
Summary:
Leelo has lived on Endla her whole life knowing that they are there to protect the forest from those who seek to destroy it. But when she sees an outsider land on the island, Leelo can’t do what she’s supposed to: kill him or let someone else know so they can kill him. Instead, she hides him and cares for him.
Jaren just moved to the town near the poison lake and the island with tons of rumors floating around it. While he isn’t sure that magic is really what is causing the strange happenings, Jaren can’t deny that things are off. When Jaren accidentally makes it onto the island, he doesn’t know what to expect of the inhabitants. But when he is greeted by a girl with weapons, he expects to die, not to be cared for.
As they make plans to get Jaren back across the lake, they discover new things about the island and its inhabitants. Things that threaten everything Leelo has ever known to be true. With all these secrets coming to light, will Leelo want to leave the only home she’s ever known?
