Mara Rutherford has created a spellbinding world that draws you in like the hunting song and doesn't let you go. This absolutely beautiful book is perfect for fans of star-crossed lovers, haunting forests, and unique magic.
I was at the edge of my seat trying to figure out if the forest was taking care of the islanders or whether there was something more sinister afoot. I loved the family dynamics and the various aspects of society and coming of age in Endla. What it means to protect your family can be vastly different depending on what you believe you are protecting them from, and I loved how even the antagonists were motivated by good intentions.
The atmosphere is reminiscent of a haunted fairy tale and is an excellent winter read to cosy up with in the cabin you are trapped in to avoid being discovered and subsequently murdered by a bunch of magical siren-like villagers (if you are in Jaren's situation).
