Watching is the job of the youth. What they are watching for is kind of vague, but for some reason strangers try to travel across the poisoned water to get here. The land has magic and so do the youth, or at least most of the youth. Tate's magic has not yet appeared and his sister is fearful it will not arrive at all. She is willing to make a blood sacrifice to help his magic find him.
