There are three definitions for the word plot. First it's the events in a book. Second it's a plan, usually nefarious, to do an action. Third it's a piece of land. All three of these definitions play a part in this book.
I would call the book a slow burn thriller. Our lead, Jacob Finch Bonner, has always wanted to be a best selling writer. He started out well with a book that sold well, making him a promising young novelist. His second book struggled to find a publisher and sort of flopped when it was printed. No one looked at his third novel. So then he teaches at a poor MFA program.
While teaching there, he meets Evan Parker. Evan has a plot concerning a mother and daughter who live together and hate each other. Jake sees the plot has value, although he thinks Evan will do a poor job of bringing the story to print. After a couple of years, since he hasn't seen the book, he starts to think about the plot for himself. To keep his conscious clear, he checks up on Evan. Finding Evan has died, he writes a novel based on that plot idea.
Jake is pleased with the success of the book. It gives him the acclaim he wants as a writer. It also gives the money to live the way he wants. It introduces him to the woman he will marry. Life couldn't be better. Then he gets an email calling him a thief.
Jake may have borrowed the basic plot for his novel, but the writing is all his. Unfortunately for him, that is a nuance that the public won't understand or accept. All the praise and money from his book will vanish. He needs to find out who is calling him out. This is where the book finally gets exciting, at least for me.
We get exerpts from Jake's book. We can see how Jake took the plot Evan had given him and expanded it into a story. We will see where Jake goes to find the person who calls him a thief and what comes from it. I did not expect the ending, and, when you consider the number of mysteries and thrillers I have read, a surprise in the end is nice. I highly recommend this book.
