I entered several drawings, hoping to win the opportunity to review an ARC of this book. Alas I was never selected. Flash forward many months and it’s finally available at the library where I got my hands on it as soon as I possibly could— and boy am I glad I did!

“Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach“. Jacob Finch Bonner (Jake) is a professor of writing at a local university. Many years ago, Jake wrote his own fiction book, but it was a big flop! One of his students is boasting that he has the best plot ever – no writer could mess up the retelling of this story!

Years go by and Jake starts wondering about the student, Evan Parker, and if he ever published his book. During his detective work Jake finds out that Evan died before he could publish his book. So naturally Jake goes ahead and writes The Crib, which is based on Evans plot. And it’s a hit!

But someone going by the username ‘talented Tom’ knows the plot to Jake’s latest book was stolen. But can you copyright a plot? What does talented Tom know?

This book has tons of twists and turns with surprises until the very last page. There are enough clues to figure out the ending – if you’re carefully paying attention. All the characters are well written and there’s not a bunch of unnecessary fluff to it definitely one of the best summer reads of 2021.
