It took me a little while to get into the groove and want to read this book. Part one and part two really dragged on for me. I started to pick up the pace a little bit more when I was about 100 pages in, but I didn’t fall in love with the book. I’m actually kind of disappointed how long it took me to like this book. This book was one of my most anticipated books of 2021, so I’m really sad how I felt about this book. The book does pick up, but I guess the villain as soon as they were introduced; I didn’t however guess the twist. I did like the twist, but after talking to my husband, I wonder how realistic it is.
I didn’t really like Jake as a main character. I found him a little on the annoying side. I don’t fault him really for taking the story of Evan, but he did kind of dig his own hole. I would have probably said I got the idea from a student and thanked him in the acknowledgement at least. I question if that really would have satisfied the villain- I personally do not think so.
It took me a long time to get into the book. I would pick it up, read a little and then put it back down. Once I was about 100 pages in I found it easier to continue reading without putting the book down. I’m not sure if I just didn’t connect to the writing or what it was.
It’s not a bad book- in fact I still gave it three stars, but it’s not what I thought it would be. I liked it, but overall I didn't love it.
