In 1917, living in Korea is difficult, the Japanese government occupies the country, and there are many restrictions. Willow is young and doesn't have many options to prosper in her country.

In previous years Korean men left their country for a job opportunity in Hawaii, now they are rich, own money and land, and are looking for Korean wives. Willow is promised a good marriage and the opportunity to study in Hawaii. She decides to leave her country behind and embark on Hawaii. She will not go alone, her best friend is also a paper bride and she will meet more girls like them on the ship, all young, poor, and excited about her new life.

It is a story of challenges, overcoming, and resistance, when they arrive in Hawaii they will realize that everything was a lie, the husbands are not rich men and they are not the handsome young men as their photographs showed.

It is also a story of friendship, Willow. Hongju and Songhwa, intelligent and realistic women, decide to face their destiny and adapt to their new life. It is not only a husband that they did not expect, but also the lifestyle, the Korean community lives apart from the rest and can be a victim of racism and machismo. Each one will have their problems and challenges and above all, they do not lose their friendship, they are always there to support each other.

Overall is an easy novel to follow, with protagonists with whom you empathize and learn about a not-so-well-known point in history.
