The Picture Bride by Lee Geum-yi is a book that definitely lives up to it's beautiful yet melancholy cover.

Willow, a teenage girl living with her family in less than ideal conditions in Korea, decides to take a chance in the mail order bride business to strive for a better life. She goes to Hawaii and the book follows her journey as well as those of two other young brides who have also never met their husbands. The main conflict of the book is these young women fighting to carve out a space for themselves, their beliefs, and thei culture among people who may be the ssme ethnicity, but have little in common with them.

I love historical fiction, but I didn't know much about mail order brides before this, so I wasn't sure if I'd like it. However, it was so well researched and fleshed out that I couldn't put it down! I'd highly recommend it as a book club book to discuss with others.
