The Picture Bride by Lee Geum-yi begins in 1917 in Ojin Village, a small village of fewer than 50 households in a remote area. Willow, 17 years old, lives there with her mother (her father and her eldest brother have both passed away). One days she's asked by a peddler whether she'll go to Powa -- Hawai'i -- and get married.

Willow hopes leaving her home for marriage will mean she'll get to go to school.

I like the blues and peaches in the sky of the cover, which depicts a woman, back turned, standing at the front of a boat on the water.

Historical fiction is not a go to for me, but I think this synopsis and setting will be a winner for fans of the genre.
