The story opens in 1917 South Korea, which is under Japanese control. We meet Willow, who lives with her family of limited means. She would love to go to school but is turning 18 and is expected to get married and start a family. But they cannot afford a dowry. So she agrees to take a leap & become a ‘picture bride’, moving to the unknowns of Hawaii to marry a complete stranger.
