This book was so much fun for me on a couple of different levels. As a mental health therapist, I have worked in a very similar environment to that depicted in The Patient. Working with high acuity patient populations can be tricky and, in terms of psychiatric hospitalization, at times, flat out scary. Now I'm going to say something a bit controversial. Are you ready? ;) Not every observable human behavior is always explainable through the lens of psychiatry. That's it and that's as spoilery as I will get in this post. Rest assured, I'm not here to ruin this book for you.I found the pacing to be quick and exciting. I kept guessing diagnoses and I ultimately did predict which direction the book took and I loved it! At one point, the narrative could have gone one of two directions. One direction I would not have agreed with and would not have enjoyed and the other (happily, the way the story ultimately went) propelled the narrative into an even faster more intense story line. Overall, I loved this book and am anticipating anything else Jasper Dewitt writes. I recommend The Patient to anyone who likes page turning thrillers that include scary aspects of the mental health process. Pick this up and let me know what you think!
