A Great Read!
Thank you Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Bookish First for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
When a book opens with, “I write this because, as of now, I am not sure if I am privy to a terrible secret or if I myself am insane," you know you're in for a treat. A supernatural horror story with psychology, Jasper DeWitt's The Patient is a small book that packs a big punch. The setting is a mental hospital where some crazy things have been happening for those dealing with a 40-year-old patient named Joe who has been there since he was 6-years-old. Every person who has attempted to treat Joe has been driven to madness or suicide. Enter Parker H., a young psychiatrist who is convinced he is going to be the person to figure out what is wrong with Joe.
I really enjoyed reading The Patient and I am not a supernatural horror reader. I immediately connected with Parker and sympathized with him. I was rooting for him to figure out what was wrong with Joe. I loved that the story was told through online posts. First person narratives are my favorite. As Parker discovers more about Joe, the story becomes terrifying. If you want a quick page-turner, The Patient is the book for you.
