Loved it!
Absolutely adored this! This YA contemporary follows Spencer, a trans teen who, after dealing with bullying at his old school, transfers to a new school and is going stealth. He earns a spot on the boys' soccer team and bonds with a teammate named Justice, who might be more than a friend.
But when the gender marker on Spencer's paperwork prevents him from playing, he must choose whether he wants to fight for his right to play--even if it means having to come out to his team.
This queer YA sports contemporary was the sweetest! It delivers a swoony romance while also exploring friendship and addressing the fight for trans kids & teens to play sports. Spencer's love interest, Justice, is also struggling as he navigates his sexuality in the context of an extremely religious family.
In terms of rep, our protagonist Spencer is a biracial Black trans boy, and the story centers on an m/m romance. There are supporting characters who are Black, gay, bi, nonbinary, and autistic.
While The Passing Playbook certainly doesn't shy away from heavy subjects, it's also a celebration of trans joy, love, and hope. Check this one out if you love YA romance and stories about sports, friendship, first love, & fighting to do what you love!
