The passing playbook tells us the story of Spencer, a trans teenager who recently changed schools after an incident in his previous school and joins the soccer team behind the back of his parents, where he falls in love with his teammate Justice, who happens to be a very Christian boy.
I think I didn’t pay attention to the synopsis because I never noticed the main thing was that Spencer falls in love with a very Christian boy. That was very interesting because Spencer and Justice are total opposites, Spencer comes from a very liberal, middle class and non-religious family, while Justice comes from a large, very Christian, conservative and poor family, which causes some clashes between them.
The book was really entertaining, I’m usually a very slow reader but I flew through this one. The chapters are short and the font very big, so that helped a lot.
I felt the story was a bit disperse, for example there was an emphasis about the music class spencer and Justice had together at first, so I thought it would be important for the plot, but then it wasn’t mentioned ever again. Also, I felt there was a lot of telling and not showing, so it was hard to really get to know other characters besides Spencer. I would’ve liked to see more of the relationship Spence had with the other characters like Riley and Macintosh, I really liked Macintosh but we don’t get to know him much, or see more of Justice’s side of the story. He has a very hard time at the end but we never get to see what or how it developed for him, only the aftermath he tells Spencer.
Overall, it was a very entertaining and quick read.
