Spencer is starting at a new more liberal private school after he was bullied at his old school during his transition from female to male. The first chapter touched on this slightly and I wonder if this will be expanded on more later in the book.
The second chapter highlights another small part of Spencer's transition, where he tells his mother he does not feel comfortable in his own body/going through puberty as a female. It is also heartening to read that Spencer's mother is supportive of his transition and wants to learn more and how to support him.
With all the anti-transgender discrimination laws in the news lately, this seems like a timely book that has a strong message about standing up for oneself and fighting to be accepted no matter what your gender identity.
