Good premise but a bit of a slow start

I really liked the idea of this book, but the writing felt a bit robotic, and I couldn’t imagine people actually saying some of the dialogue. The main character, Spencer, was ok for the most part, but sometimes his character seemed really two dimensional. Some parts also seemed like they were trying too hard to appeal to young people, like with the references to online slang. I did like how Spencer’s parents were accepting of him but still a bit weary to let him be on the soccer team because it leaves some room to see how his parents grow and become more accepting of him. I would probably read it just to see what happens with the soccer team, but the excerpt left me a bit disappointed.
