This debut novel surprised me with the ease at which the author story-telling ability engages readers and pulls them into the world of Spencer - a high school sophomore who has changed schools and some other aspects of his life. It is day one for him when the story begins. Spencer's biggest concern, however, is that he is a transgender male. The hormones he began two years ago at age 13 (with unwavering support from his parents) have helped some of the issues that people might notice first when they meet someone - body fat v. muscle and voice. However, Spencer seems to want to be identified as male for a while before his classmates know he is transgender. When he joins the school's Queer Straight Alliance, he simply announces his pronouns are he/him. But in the span of one day a lot has happened and Spencer feels pulled in so many different directions.

Based on the three sample chapters, I think part of the charm of this book is that it presents very realistic issues about being transgender in high school.

I found myself really wanting to know how things are going to work out, and I'm disappointed that there are no more books to claim with points.
