The Orphan Collector is a historical fiction novel set in 1918 following the story of 13 year old Pia Lange, a German immigrant in Philadelphia's slums. The celebration of the end of World War I is quickly over as the threat of the Spanish Flu grows. As people die suddenly and others disappear into quarantine, Pia is forced to leave her baby twin brothers alone after their supplies of food runs out. The journey into the busy streets of chaos and sickness prove more difficult and Pia gets sick with the flu and eventually ends up in an orphanage. Pia is determined and focused on finding her brothers no matter the cost or time it takes her to do so.

This was a tragic and moving story that captivated my attention early on in the plot. The demonstration of what matters most in a time of crisis is so relatable in this novel. Themes of resilience and the great lengths we will go for our loved ones are very strong and again, quite moving. This was a great historical fiction novel.
