When I first became aware of this book, COVID-19 was not yet a part of our collective experience yet so I didn't think twice about entering to have a chance at reading and reviewing this book. I'm fairly certain that it had the impact it did because I was reading about a pandemic in the middle of a pandemic!

There are moments that the book takes on an almost atmospheric feel. You experience Pia's bout of the Spanis flu right along with her. The lost time, the confusion over where she is, the anguish when she doesn't know what has happened to her brothers . . . the story frequently took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes.

I loved the characters, the historical references, the honest description of what life was like for immigrants in a post-war America. The ONLY thing way that the story could have been improved was the ending. It felt just the tiniest bit rushed but was still satisfying if a little quick. Definitely a must-read for fans of historical fiction.
