This was an eerily appropriate book to be reading now. Set in Philadelphia during the Spanish Influenza in 1918 this is a riveting historical fiction about a dark time in American history. Told in alternating perspectives of Pia a 13 year old child of German immigrants and Bernice a widowed new mother. This book was full of horrifying things that you could see happening, but it was full of resilance and hope and I couldn’t tear myself away from the pages. Pia loses her mother to the flu and her father is off fighting the war so she finds herself alone with her twin baby brothers. Pia is a beautiful character - I hurt when she hurt and I cheered when she was happy. I highly recommend this book, a haunting and moving adventure!
