This book was beautiful and emotional. I was drawn into Pia's story from the very first chapter. You could feel the love between Pia, her mother, and her brothers. Even though I knew it was coming from the blurb, when Pia's mother died and her brothers were taken, I felt the horror and anguish that Pia felt.

Bernice's character (a.k.a. Nurse Wallis) was already very well written. I hated her and was angry during her chapters, a testament to the emotion and flow of the writing. She was so rude and snooty and evil, I just wanted to smack her. I was a little conflicted about whether Bernice should have had her own first-person chapters, but by the end of the book I grew to appreciate the dual narratives.
