This story was set in 1918 when the Spanish Flu hit the U.S. Even though this story was set over 100 years ago there are so many parallels between what happened then and what is happening now. I do have to say that based on the details of this book, the Spanish Flu was much worse than what we are facing now. However the parallels about how immigrants were treated are very similar to today.
This story centered around Pia, a girl whose parents are from Germany. She is discriminated against because she is German and WW1 had just ended. She also feels things differently than others. She is extremely sensitive to touch. Her mother passes from the flu and she is left to take care of her twin infant brothers. One day she leaves the apartment to find food and she succumbs to the flu. What follows is a heart wrenching story of what she must endure and her quest to find out what happened to her brothers. This was a truly moving story that I had a hard time putting down.
