The story concerns a young German-American girl in 1918 and how she interacts with those around her in Pennsylvania. She befriends a young Irish American boy of whom she was initially wary of due to the poor treatment of German Americans at that time. Pia—the protagonist—is written well and in a way that is relatively engaging. I looked forward to hearing more about her.
