The Only Good Indians: a Novel is quite a ride. Think of it as an old truck, it’s bed filled with people from the Blackfeet (& nearby Crow) Reservation. The driver is a wronged entity whose destiny was derailed by four of the reckless young men in the truck bed.
There will be blood & you will care about the people caught in a wronged creature’s revenge arc.
The tale is broken into three sections & told from several POVs. I’ve seen references to Peter Straub’s Ghost Story & that’s a good comparison. What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done? Did you get away with it? Is its shadow heavy on your heels? Is it wielding a blade?
There are little good stories and moments through out. There is a new kind of final girl. There is a basketball game with the highest stakes ever. And there are Elk. Jones has written a novel that is both funny & terrifying. Often at the same time.
