This definitely took me time to get into, as the magical realism and elements of fantasy aren't usually present in my traditional reads. However, I was extremely excited to be reading such a prolific Indigenous author.

Overall, I continue to learn that horror just isn't the genre for me - with this and with Mexican Gothic recently, the macabre and fantasy elements just aren't typically my favorite in books.

However, this book was well written and was incredibly visually stimulating. The author has a way of bringing a scene and setting to life; as someone who has been to and lived in the Dakotas before, he did a remarkable job at describing the rolling plains and the, sometimes, desolate feel of the area. Ultimately, I think I will continue to pick up books by this author and try to read more Indigenous work, but I also may just stay away from horror and stick with thrillers or mysteries.
