I wanted to enjoy this book, but it fell flat for me. The premise is great - an ancient elk spirit getting revenge for a botched hunt - but the execution was lacking. The beginning was the best part for me when we were focused on Lewis's story. It started going downhill once Elk-Head Woman was revealed. I would have liked there to be more suspense about who/what was out there, but Elk-Head Woman was shown too early on in the book. After that, it was just an endless series of violence and gore. I was bored after the first 1/3 of the book because the suspense and mystery were gone. I'm not a fan of gore as a scare mechanism, but that's the main focus of the book. It could have been a lot better with some build-up and suspense.
