The Only Good Indians was some really excellent horror. The atmosphere was gray and foreboding throughout, the monster was scary yet its thirst for revenge was understandable.
The characters are complex. They never become stereotypes, they all incorporate their heritage and cope with the difficulties in their own ways. I enjoyed the way none of them questioned the supernatural, as characters in horror novels frequently do. They don't get bogged down in "this isn't real," they accept the fact that they're facing a monster straight away and get down to dealing with it rather than questioning it. It was a refreshing take.
The horror elements were great, too, brutal in places, quietly ominous in others.
There was something about the writing style that slowed me down, though. I had to re-read in places. I can't put my finger one what exactly it was, maybe some turns of phrases that were just a little bit awkward. While the prose was good, it wasn't the easiest read and sometimes slowed down the action.
