I decided to read this book on a whim because I love horror and have yet to explore books by Indigenous authors. This struck me as the precise genre that I love, adults grappling with an odd event from their childhood. To explain it though, I'm not sure. The narrative feels about as unhinged as the plot. It's an unusual affair revolving around the sighting of a past leading into the tangled struggles of when it comes to identity. After a long-ago hunting trip, individuals start to face a haunted memory as they're visited by a creature they killed. The entity that chases them down, breaks apart their lives blurring the lines of what is real and what is false. Stephen Graham Jones' narrative style allows readers to enter an atmospheric tale that's quite the experience. While it is a bit jarring, it serves the story well. My one complaint was feeling at arms length away from the characters yet at the same time, I can't help, but feel as if that's the purpose. It is a tale about identity, after all.
