I could not put this book down after the 57% point.

Let’s start with what I loved. I think the book had a really original setting and concept! The use of environment/a climate crisis to launch this futuristic society was fascinating. I loved the tech and the rating system was interesting, the whole set up felt very black mirror-esque.

This book was very well written! I think what the author did with the point of views worked super well as Cee’s chapters were first person- creating a closer emotional bond. Meanwhile Kay’s were third person and left the reader feeling a bit more distant from her. The writing also often tied into oceanic imagery and metaphors so, that was really neat considering the prominence of the sea on the cover and in the plot!

The twist is what changed this book for me from a 3 star to a 4 star. I felt so much more invested after the revelation that happens a little over halfway through. I think it is worth sticking out past the slow beginning.

My big issue does stem from characters though. I had a difficult time becoming invested on what happened to them. Well more so - I did not care really about any character except Cee. I liked Cee a lot, and she carried this book on her back. I loved how her compassion and emotion are highlighted as a strength, and I love her for it.

I felt sort of detached from Kay though she grew on me a bit more by the end. I get that is her purpose for characterization but it always felt a bit too distant. The side characters could’ve used a lot more depth and scenes too, especially for emotional hits during later plot points that involved them.

I liked it a lot though, and I’m always very soft for narratives about sisters. Though I wish we got to see more of these two together and got a bit more closure with the open ending even though I do kind of like the open nature of it. This is simply a book you got to read for yourself.
