The fantasy world is somewhat established in the first chapter with a first-person narrator who somehow has made it to a deserted island with a bot (who mostly just defines words it hears), and a rescued but mentally and physically damaged friend. Just as the reader might think there is going to be a rescue or a great escape for this trio, the second chapter begins the third-person flashback to a dystopian world. The tangled relationships and love-interests are contemporary realistic, but clearly the computer-like brain functions of the characters' are going to play an important role. It seems like an interesting story, but I needed another chapter or two to really get a feel for this narrative.
