This book is about nine very young women who were in the prime of their lives when they were sent to live in a concentration camp during the war. They became friends and together were able to survive the brutality of the guards, the harsh living environment, the unbearable work details, and the deprivation of food. One even gave birth at the camp and was allowed to keep her daughter for seventeen days before she was taken away. The story chronicles their pre-camp life, camp life, their daring escape, and parts of their post-war life. You cannot help but be impressed by their courage, their wit, and their undeniable will to survive this ordeal.
My only criticism is that the book jumps around ALOT. I found it distracting and difficult at times to follow. Because the characters are not presented to you in a clear, linear way, I found myself asking very often, "Wait, which one is this?" I wish that the book was more clearly organized for the reader.
