“The Nine” is the detailed account of nine female members of the French Resistance during World War II. Author Gwen Strauss does a masterful job of providing historical information and creating vivid and detailed accounts of the harrowing journey the nine women went through. Her extensive research (which included interviews with her Great Aunt, the leader of the group) allowed her to create an academic biography of these women that reads like a novel. The rich detail about the daily activities of the resistance, eventual capture of the members, and conditions in the camps where they were held is astounding; and adds an emotional layer not seen in many comparable works. I will definitely be picking up a copy.
