I love Egyptian culture, so being drenched in it as I read about Hui's story was pure bliss. Smith is so talented in his sweeping prose, and I felt Hui's pain so strongly as the life he loves is ripped from him. His father is murdered by his stepmother and he's taken as a captive.

This book jumps into the action very quickly, but the story and the background were built up with near-perfect timing beforehand. There was never a time where I was bored, and the pacing kept the balance so I was never confused as to what was going on. I love stories that dive right into action like that and The New Kingdom definitely kept up the pace.

The dilemma Hui faces about his past versus his future had me on the edge of my seat. Paired with the historical figures and rich Egyptian culture throughout, I was never bored and had a hard time setting this book down. A great read and I really enjoyed going through Hui's journey with him!
